Orlando is a place with a unique artistic community that can express itself in the most innovative and fantastic ways possible. As executive director of Creative City Project, Cole NeSmith and his team have organized IMMERSE, an annual performing and interactive art experience that brings downtown Orlando to life over the course of several days in mid-October. Every year, the event showcases more than 1,000 artists from 100+ art organizations and attracts a diverse audience that continues to grow exponentially.
One of Cole’s main objectives for this impactful project is to facilitate meaningful, shared experiences. In 2018, Falcon’s Creative Group was brought in to create one such experience.
It started with a conversation Cole had with Orlando Health, a presenting sponsor of IMMERSE. They were talking about the human body being a work of art and asked themselves, what would be the best way to amplify this statement? They came up with a concept called “The Art of Athleticism” and enlisted Falcon’s to execute their vision.
When players first step up to take their turn in front of a large canvas, they see an abstract representation of themselves in a multitude of colors. They are encouraged to move their hands, arms, legs, whatever, to “paint” a digital image on the screen. The more exaggerated the movement, the better. What a fun way to let loose, feel free, and make a mess, albeit a clean one!
Up to six guests at one time can interact with color, light, and each other using gesture tracking and motion tracking technology. Their movements are tracked and displayed in real-time using a custom software plugin to bring data from Xbox Kinect sensors into a Unity game engine.
The interactive installation debuted at IMMERSE 2018, but it was so popular that it has since made several more appearances at art events around the Orlando area.
